Do it again
It has been said that, the sign of an addict, is to do something repeatedly expecting a different result. So we find ourselves daily doing the same things in life. Some we expect different results, some we don’t. What kind of things do we expect to be different? What do we expect to be the same? Let’s examine a couple things.
I’m a creature of habit. Like getting ready in the mornings. I take my shower. I start at my head, shampoo. Shave my face, the wash my body. For 40 years I have done the same routine. Do I expect a different result? No, I expect to come out of the shower clean. Then after toweling off, I get dressed and back to the bathroom to do my hair, put my contacts in and move on with my day. Same thing, same way, everyday, same result.
Before I was born, my Grandma Glasco was a baker for the Waldorf Fostoria Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. She baked the world famous Red Velvet Cakes. I can remember her telling me after she had retired, one day standing in the kitchen baking a Red Velvet cake for my birthday. She said, “You know, when I first started working there, I had to look at the receipt everyday to make sure I got it all exactly the same, each time. Then after working there for some time, I knew the receipt by heart.” So, when Grandma moved from Chicago back to Carbondale, she was able to also bake the same cakes of the once prized and secret treasure on her own. After Grandma passed away, we figured that the prized receipt was gone for ever. But one day, fumbling through one of her old cookbooks, my mother found that receipt written down in my Grandma’s writing. Well, now, go search on the internet, it’s right there. But before the internet, it was still prized by my family. Mom was able to recreate the same receipt because Grandmas took the time to write it down. Boy am I thankful.
Back to my point about doing something the same way, expecting different but getting the same results. Because Grandma had trained her mind, or memorized it, she was able to reproduce the cake the same way, every time. But what would have happened if she had put green food coloring in, instead of red, would it have tasted the same? I suppose, but would it have looked the same? Absolutely not. So if we change up one thing, we will get a different result.
Now what about porn? What about our addiction and finding a cure to it?
When we look and then say I’m done, we will continue to get the same results as before, failure. But when we change things up, try somthing different, something new or just something that has been suggested to us, we might just get a different result.
