A Father’s Love: Reflections on God’s Heart for Us
The Encounter
A few weeks before the holiday season, I joined a group to share some exciting updates about Restored Warriors. My mind was preoccupied with the ministry—its challenges, triumphs, and the lives it was impacting. But as I sat in that zoom meeting, my attention was drawn away from my purpose. There was a young man, Jonathan, holding his baby.
The scene was simple, yet profoundly moving. Jonathan’s face radiated a light that seemed to emanate from the very core of his being. He held his child with such tenderness, love, and care. It was as though the entire world faded away, leaving only the bond between this father and his baby. I could hardly focus on what I was there to do because the beauty of that moment captivated me.
Before I left, I felt the Spirit prompt me to pray for Jonathan and his child. As I prayed, I realized I wasn’t just speaking words for them—I was experiencing a revelation of the deep, unshakable love a father has for his child.
The Revelation on the Road
Fast forward to today—January 1, 2025. During a four-hour road trip, God began to speak to my heart. He brought that moment with Jonathan and his baby back to my memory, but this time, He added a profound revelation:
“The love Jonathan showed for his baby is not even a fraction of the love I have for My children.”
The words hit me like a tidal wave. The overwhelming love Jonathan displayed, the protection he exuded, the joy and care he had for his child—it was only a shadow, a small glimpse of the Father’s heart for us.
This revelation carried personal weight for me. I am a father to a now 35-year-old daughter. I remember holding her in my arms as a baby and feeling overwhelmed with love. I would have given anything to protect her, to provide for her, and to see her grow into the woman she is today. That kind of love—the unconditional love of a father—gave me a glimpse into the heart of our Heavenly Father. And yet, as deep as my love for my daughter is, it cannot compare to the infinite love God has for His children.
Scripture paints this reality beautifully:
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 John 3:1)
God’s love is not just greater than human love; it is incomprehensible. No matter how deeply a human father loves, protects, and provides for his child, it cannot begin to compare to the boundless, infinite love of God.
A Father’s Protection
Jonathan’s protective instincts for his child were palpable. Every movement he made showed a deep commitment to keeping his baby safe. I could relate to that from my own experience as a father. Yet, as God reminded me, even Jonathan’s protection pales in comparison to the way our Heavenly Father guards His children.
“The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” (Psalm 121:8)
God is not distant or detached; He is actively involved in our lives, shielding us from harm and providing refuge in times of trouble. Just as that baby fully trusted Jonathan to hold and protect him, we too must trust God to be our fortress.
A Father’s Provision
Jonathan’s care for his baby extended beyond physical safety. It was evident that he would give anything to meet his child’s needs. I know that feeling intimately. As a father, there is nothing I wouldn’t do to provide for my daughter. And yet, God’s provision is infinitely greater.
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)
Our Heavenly Father doesn’t just provide; He lavishes His blessings upon us. He gave the ultimate gift—His Son, Jesus Christ—to meet our deepest need for salvation.
A Father’s Forgiveness
As I reflected on Jonathan’s love for his child, I thought about the inevitable moments when that child will stumble and make mistakes. Jonathan’s love will remain steadfast, forgiving, and unconditional. I’ve experienced this with my daughter—extending forgiveness, love, and grace, even when things didn’t go as planned. But even this is just a faint reflection of God’s forgiveness.
“As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” (Psalm 103:12)
God’s forgiveness is complete and unchanging. No sin is too great, no failure too deep, for the Father’s arms to welcome us back.
Childlike Faith
The most striking thing about Jonathan’s baby was the trust. The child rested securely in his father’s arms, fully dependent and without fear. This is the kind of faith God calls us to have:
“Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” (Mark 10:15)
Just as the baby trusted Jonathan to provide, protect, and love, we are called to trust God with our whole hearts. He meets us exactly where we are, no matter how broken or weary, and offers us everything—life, hope, and salvation.
A New Year’s Challenge
As we enter this new year, let’s take on a challenge: Trust God with childlike faith. Let go of fear, worry, and the need to control, and simply rest in His arms. Trust Him to provide, to protect, and to guide.
Reflect on this truth daily:
God’s love for you is greater than anything you can comprehend. He has already given His best for you in Jesus Christ. Let this truth shape your year—your decisions, your relationships, and your faith.
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21)
Let’s walk into 2025 with a renewed sense of wonder at God’s love and a commitment to live as His children, trusting Him fully and sharing His love with the world.
