Bringing Secret Sins to Light
Secret sins are the hidden struggles that we bury deep within ourselves, hoping that no one will ever discover them. They are the thoughts, actions, and habits that we know are wrong, but we keep them in the shadows because of fear, shame, or pride. The problem with secret sins is that they grow in the darkness, becoming stronger and more controlling over time. They create a barrier between us and God, between us and the people we love, and even between us and the person we want to be.
For many years, I lived with secret sins that consumed my life. I was caught in the grip of same-sex attraction, deceit, and pornography. Outwardly, I presented myself as someone who had it all together, but behind closed doors, I was living a life that was tearing me apart. I was constantly searching for love and acceptance in all the wrong places, each time finding myself more broken and empty than before. I lied to my family, to my friends, and even to myself, pretending that everything was fine while I was drowning in guilt and shame.
The burden of carrying these secret sins was overwhelming. Every day, I lived in fear of being found out, of my carefully constructed facade crumbling before me. But even more than the fear of being exposed was the deep, gnawing emptiness inside. I knew that I was living a lie, and that lie was keeping me from experiencing the true love and freedom that God offers.
It wasn’t until January 13, 2020, that everything began to change. During a church service, I experienced a powerful moment of surrender. I lifted my hand to God, and in that moment, I felt His presence in a way I never had before. I knew that I could no longer continue living the way I had been. I surrendered my life to Jesus, and He began to work in me, revealing the depth of His love and the power of His forgiveness.
But surrendering to Jesus was just the beginning. I had to take the next step—I had to bring my secret sins into the light.
One of the most powerful steps in my journey was the act of confession. James 5:16 says, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” This verse became a guiding light for me as I began to confront the sins I had kept hidden for so long.
Confession is not about airing your dirty laundry for the sake of it; it’s about acknowledging the truth, breaking the power that secret sins hold over you, and inviting God’s healing into your life. For me, confession was a terrifying step. The thought of exposing my darkest struggles to others filled me with fear and anxiety. But I knew that if I wanted to truly experience the freedom that Christ offered, I had to take this step.
I began by confessing my sins to God in prayer, laying everything bare before Him. I admitted to the things I had kept hidden for so long, the things I was most ashamed of. It was a deeply humbling experience, but also incredibly freeing. For the first time in a long time, I felt the weight of those sins begin to lift as I laid them at the feet of Jesus.
But confession didn’t stop there. God led me to share my struggles with a trusted group of friends—people who could offer support, accountability, and prayer. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but it was also one of the most powerful. As I spoke the truth out loud, the fear and shame that had kept me in bondage began to lose their grip on me. I was no longer hiding; I was walking in the light.
Bringing my secret sins to light was the first step in a longer journey of healing and restoration. It wasn’t an instant fix—there were still challenges and setbacks along the way—but I was no longer walking that path alone. God was with me every step of the way, guiding me, comforting me, and showing me the depth of His love and grace.
As I continued to walk in the light, I began to experience a freedom that I had never known before. The chains that had held me captive for so long were being broken, and I was beginning to see myself through God’s eyes—as His beloved child, redeemed and set free.
God’s love was transforming me from the inside out. The more I leaned into His Word and spent time in prayer, the more I felt His presence guiding me away from the things that had once ensnared me. My desires began to change; I no longer craved the things that had once held me in bondage. Instead, I longed for more of God—for His truth, His righteousness, and His love.
One of the key elements in my journey to freedom was the power of accountability and community. I found that I couldn’t do this alone—I needed the support of others who understood what I was going through and who could walk with me on this path.
This is one of the reasons I was led to create Restored Warriors, a ministry that provides a safe space for men to find freedom from pornography and sexual addictions. It’s a place where they can bring their secret sins into the light, find accountability, and experience the transformative power of God’s love. Through Restored Warriors, I’ve seen countless men find the same freedom that I’ve found, and it’s been one of the greatest joys of my life to walk alongside them in their journey.
As I look back on my journey, I see how far God has brought me. The man I was before—the one who was trapped in darkness, fear, and shame—is not the man I am today. Through God’s grace, I have been set free, and I now live in the light of His love.
Bringing my secret sins to light was not easy, but it was necessary for me to experience the fullness of God’s freedom. Today, I no longer live in fear of being exposed because I know that my identity is secure in Christ. I am His beloved child, forgiven and redeemed, and nothing can change that.
If you’re struggling with secret sins, I want to encourage you to take that first step—to bring those things into the light. It may be terrifying, but it’s the only way to break the chains that are holding you back. Confess your sins to God, seek out accountability, and surround yourself with a community that will support you and lift you up in prayer.
Remember, there is no sin too great for God’s grace, no darkness too deep for His light to penetrate. He is waiting with open arms, ready to forgive, heal, and restore. Step into the light, and experience the freedom that only He can give.
