Navigating Singleness: Embracing the Journey with Purpose and Joy

Singleness is often viewed as a season of waiting—waiting for the right person, the right time, or the right circumstances to finally move forward into a relationship. But what if singleness could be more than just a waiting room? What if it could be a season of deep personal growth, discovery, and a fulfilling relationship with God?

I understand the ups and downs of singleness firsthand. For 14 years, I was single, navigating life with all its challenges, joys, and uncertainties. Last year, I entered into a relationship that led to a six-month engagement, but when that relationship ended, I found myself at a crossroads. Instead of rushing to find another relationship or feeling pressured to “move on,” I made a decision that surprised even me—I purposed to embrace singleness for life. As I’ve come to realize, sometimes “single life = no wife” really does mean “happy life = no wife.

One of the biggest challenges during my years of singleness was fighting the lie that my worth was tied to my relationship status. Society often pushes the narrative that we are incomplete without a partner, but the truth is, our identity and worth are found in Christ alone.

During those 14 years, I learned to find fulfillment in my relationship with God. 1 Peter 2:9 reminds us, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession.” Understanding that I am God’s special possession—loved, valued, and complete in Him—shifted my perspective. I realized that my worth wasn’t something that a relationship could give or take away. This truth became a cornerstone for me as I navigated the ups and downs of singleness.

Singleness offers a unique opportunity to focus on your purpose and calling without the responsibilities that often come with marriage and family. For me, four of those years of singleness were a time of significant growth, both personally and spiritually. I was able to invest deeply in my ministry, pour into relationships with friends and family, and pursue passions that God placed on my heart.

I found that singleness wasn’t a hindrance to my purpose—it was a part of it. God used that season to mold me, to deepen my relationship with Him, and to prepare me for the unique path He has for my life. Now, having made the decision to embrace singleness for life, I continue to see how God is using this season to impact others and fulfill His plans for me.  And truthfully, I’ve found that my “happy life” does indeed correlate with “no wife.”

The end of my engagement was one of the most challenging experiences I’ve faced. It brought up feelings of loss, confusion, and disappointment. However, through that heartache, I learned the importance of trusting God’s plan over my own. Proverbs 3:5-6 became my anchor: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

The decision to remain single wasn’t born out of bitterness or fear but out of a deep sense of peace and clarity that this was the path God was calling me to. I’ve come to see that singleness is not a lesser calling—it’s simply different, and it can be just as fulfilling and rich as any other path.

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned in singleness is that life doesn’t have to be on hold just because you’re single. There’s a fullness of life that can be experienced right where you are. For me, this has meant investing in deep, meaningful friendships, serving others, and pursuing passions that bring me joy and fulfillment.

I’ve learned to cultivate joy in the everyday moments and to find contentment in the life God has given me. Philippians 4:11-13 speaks to this: “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation… I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Contentment isn’t about having everything we want; it’s about finding peace and joy in Christ, regardless of our circumstances.

Singleness, whether temporary or lifelong, can be a season of incredible growth, fulfillment, and joy. It’s an opportunity to deepen your relationship with God, to discover your purpose, and to build a life that is rich and full, regardless of your relationship status.

For me, singleness has become a calling—a path that God has purposed for my life. It’s a journey that I’m embracing with open hands, trusting that God’s plans for me are good, even if they look different from what I once imagined.  And as I’ve discovered, “single life = no wife” really can lead to a “happy life.”

If you find yourself navigating singleness, I encourage you to see it not as a waiting room but as a season filled with opportunities for growth, purpose, and deep connection with God. Your worth is not determined by whether you’re single or married; it’s found in your identity as a beloved child of God. Embrace this season, trust God’s plan for your life, and know that you are complete in Him.
