The Importance of Discipleship
In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it can be easy to lose sight of what truly matters. As followers of Christ, we are called to live lives that reflect His love, grace, and truth. One of the most vital aspects of this journey is discipleship. But what exactly is discipleship, and why is it so crucial for our spiritual growth and the health of the church?
What is Discipleship?
Discipleship is the process of learning to follow Jesus and becoming more like Him in every aspect of our lives. It involves intentional, ongoing efforts to grow in our understanding of God’s Word, to cultivate spiritual disciplines, and to live out our faith in practical ways. At its core, discipleship is about transformation—being changed from the inside out by the power of the Holy Spirit.
The concept of discipleship is deeply rooted in the Bible. Jesus Himself modeled discipleship during His earthly ministry. He chose twelve men to be His disciples, teaching them, guiding them, and preparing them to continue His work after His ascension. In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus gives the Great Commission to His followers:
*“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’” (Matthew 28:18-20, NIV).
This passage highlights the importance of making disciples and teaching them to obey Jesus’ commands. It’s a mandate for every believer, emphasizing that discipleship is not optional but essential.
Why is Discipleship Important?
1. Spiritual Growth: Discipleship helps us grow in our relationship with Christ. Through regular study of the Bible, prayer, and fellowship with other believers, we deepen our understanding of God’s character and His will for our lives. This growth enables us to live more faithfully and effectively as His representatives in the world.
2. Accountability and Support: Being part of a discipleship community provides accountability and support. When we walk alongside others in our faith journey, we can encourage each other, hold each other accountable, and provide support during challenging times. This sense of community is vital for our spiritual health and perseverance.
3. Obedience to Christ’s Command: As mentioned in the Great Commission, Jesus commands us to make disciples. By engaging in discipleship, we are obeying His directive and participating in the expansion of His kingdom. This obedience brings glory to God and furthers His redemptive work in the world.
4. Equipping for Ministry: Discipleship equips us for ministry. As we grow in our faith, we become better prepared to serve others, share the gospel, and use our gifts and talents for God’s glory. Effective discipleship empowers believers to step into their God-given roles and make a positive impact in their communities.
5. Multiplication of Believers: Discipleship leads to the multiplication of believers. When we invest in the spiritual growth of others, they, in turn, can disciple additional people. This multiplication effect helps the church grow and thrive, spreading the message of Christ to more people.
Engaging in discipleship requires intentionality and commitment. Here are a few practical steps to get started:
– Join a Small Group: Small groups provide a setting for in-depth Bible study, prayer, and fellowship. They offer a supportive environment where you can grow alongside other believers.
– Find a Mentor: Seek out a mature Christian who can guide you in your faith journey. A mentor can provide wisdom, encouragement, and accountability.
– Be a Mentor: As you grow in your faith, look for opportunities to mentor others. Discipleship is a two-way street; as you are discipled, you should also disciple others.
– Cultivate Spiritual Disciplines: Regularly practice spiritual disciplines such as prayer, Bible study, fasting, and worship. These practices help you stay connected to God and grow in your faith.
– Serve Others: Look for ways to serve in your church and community. Serving helps you put your faith into action and reflects the love of Christ to those around you.
Discipleship is a vital component of the Christian life. It helps us grow closer to Christ, supports us in our faith journey, and equips us for effective ministry. By engaging in discipleship, we obey Jesus’ command and participate in the expansion of His kingdom. Let us commit to being disciples and making disciples, building a strong foundation in Christ that will impact our lives and the world around us.
